Replacing a Post Indicator Valve and 10-Inch Gate Valve from 1977: A Behind-the-Scenes Look

This week, we’re spotlighting a recent post indicator valve (PIV) and 10-inch gate valve replacement — a challenging but essential upgrade to a property’s fire protection infrastructure.

What Is a Post Indicator Valve (PIV) and Why Does It Matter?

A PIV is a crucial component in many fire protection systems, typically installed above ground to operate a buried gate valve. It allows firefighters or maintenance crews to easily check whether water is flowing or blocked — without needing to access underground piping.

  • Post: The above-ground housing.
  • Indicator: Displays “OPEN” or “SHUT” clearly through a window.
  • Function: Provides safe, visible control of fire protection water flow.

These systems are often found in:

  • Fire sprinkler mains
  • Private hydrants
  • Campus fire loops
  • Industrial fire systems

Our Replacement Project

The existing setup at the site dated back to 1977. Here's a breakdown of the steps we took to complete the upgrade:

  • Shutdown & Drain: We shut down the full fire protection loop and drained the system.
  • 811 Call: We contacted Ohio 811 before excavation to ensure safety and compliance.
  • Excavation: Dug more than 10 feet deep to access the valve.
  • Removal: The old bolts were cut off using a plasma cutter.
  • Heavy Lifting: A small truck crane was used to safely remove and replace the equipment.

Why the PIV and Gate Valve Work So Well Together

The PIV controls the gate valve located underground. Turning the PIV handle lifts or lowers the gate inside the pipe, allowing or blocking water flow. Together, they offer:

  • NFPA 24 fire code compliance
  • Tamper-resistant security
  • Immediate visual confirmation
  • Reliable operation in outdoor environments
