NFPA 13 Fire Code Compliance
– Fairfield Fire Protection
Fire sprinkler systems are designed to activate quickly in the event of a fire, but what happens when the sprinkler heads are dirty? A buildup of dust, grease, or debris—often referred to as “loaded” sprinkler heads—can delay or even prevent activation. That delay can cost property, time, and lives.
What the Code Requires
According to NFPA 13, sprinkler heads must be maintained in a clean and unobstructed condition. If contamination is present, they must be either:
- Carefully cleaned using NFPA-approved methods such as compressed air and vacuuming, without touching or damaging the heads, or
- Replaced entirely, if more aggressive cleaning methods (such as scrubbing or wiping) are required.
There is no room for shortcuts. Attempting to clean a sprinkler head improperly not only violates NFPA 13 standards but also compromises your entire fire protection system.

Real-World Application
This week, our team at Fairfield Fire Protection responded to a facility where several sprinkler heads were visibly contaminated. Using proper techniques, we cleaned the heads safely and thoroughly with compressed air and vacuum tools—without compromising their integrity. The system is now back in compliance and ready to perform should an emergency occur.
Don’t Wait for an Emergency
