Fire Department Connections: Are Yours Ready?
Blocked, uncapped, or unmarked FDCs can delay emergency response when seconds matter.

One often overlooked but critical detail for fire safety is the condition and accessibility of your building’s Fire Department Connections (FDCs). These exterior connections allow fire crews to quickly supply water to your sprinkler or standpipe systems during a fire — but only if they are properly maintained.
Keep Them Accessible
FDCs should always remain clear and easily accessible. This means keeping them free from obstructions such as landscaping, parked vehicles, or storage items. A blocked connection could cost precious time when firefighters arrive on scene.
Keep Them Capped
Protective caps must be securely in place. Caps help prevent debris, dirt, and insects from entering the pipes, which could compromise the system’s performance when it’s needed most. Missing or damaged caps should be replaced immediately to ensure the integrity of your fire protection system.
Keep Them Marked
Clear and visible signage is essential. Firefighters must be able to locate your FDC quickly, especially in low-visibility conditions. Proper signage should comply with local fire codes and include reflective materials or contrasting colors that are easily seen from a distance.
